
One Hundred and Twenty three (123) farmers in the Sefwi Wiawso, a town in the western region are crying foul following the destruction of their rice farms by the Tano river.
Mr. William Kofi Appiah, the operation officer of the ministry of food and agriculture (Mofa) in the area says the damage is as result of the over flow of river Tano
.
According to him 83 male and 40 female farmers were affected.
In an interview with oyerepa news, he stated that about 86 hectares of rice farms have been swept away.
Maize and beans Farms which forms part of government’s initiative; planting for food’s and jobs were all affected.
The affected farmers are calling on government; NGO’s and individuals to come to their aid to enable them feed their families and pay monies to banks they borrowed from.
Some cocoa farms were also affected.
It is estimated that the 86 hectares rice farms will amount to thousands of Ghana cedis.
Mr. Kofi Appiah says one acre of rice farm produces 85 bags. adding: a bag of rice is currently sells at 200 cedis.
The sad aspect of it is that, the affected farmers risk losing all their produce looking at the extent of damage at the moment, He said.
